Maintaining and Enhancing Income and Economic Stability.
Families must be economically viable in order to survive The loss of a job
may lead to a loss of housing, access to health case and even the break-up
of the family. For workers who have lost their jobs, or become disabled or
who otherwise are unable to obtain employment, establishing eligibility for
public benefits may be the only way to preserve a source on income for the
family. In other situations, often following illness and loss of employment,
insurmountable debt may threaten basic economic security. We provide legal
assistance in the following areas:
Income Security
NPLS provides a full range of services in all counties for:
- SSI appeals at the Administrative Law Judge level
- SSI discontinuation
- Establishment of benefits for unemployment compensation
- Welfare cases including case assistance and food stamps.
- Removing obstacles to employment including restoration of drivers license, or expungement of a record.
- Wage claims and issues under the Family Medical Leave Act.
- Bankruptcy when debt collection poses an immanent loss of home or essential property
- Improper execution by creditors on personal property.
NPLS may provide some assistance, depending on the county for:
- SSI or SSD overpayments
- SSI cases prior to an ALJ appeal when there is a clear economic need
- Rent or tax rebates
- Unemployment compensation overpayments
- Income taxes
- Employment cases not listed above
- Bankruptcy when the clients mental or physical health is threatened by improper collection practices
- Debt counseling, and debt collection defense
- Lawsuits where he effect of a loss would be significant to the client
- Auto accident defense for uninsured motorist or where insurer refuses to defend
- Business incorporation or dissolution
- Community or business development
NPLS provides self-help material and community workshops on rights in employment,
public benefits and consumer debts matters housing and is available to train
advocates and community organizations.
NPLS provides no services for SSDA (distinct from SSI) cases, Veterans’ benefits,
Worker’s compensation, military discharge, and bankruptcy in which the client has no assets at risk,
or which is related to the operation of a business.
